The Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) will provide onsite medical support for the nearly 3,000 participants in the upcoming EnduraFit Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon that will take place on June 9, 2013 in Cambridge, Maryland. This competition at Great Marsh Park will feature a 1.2 mile swim, followed by a 56 mile bike ride. After the bike ride, the race will end with a 13.1 mile run. This competition is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT) and organizers will follow the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) rules.

In order to support this major event, the MDDF has activated Task Force Terrapin under the command of Brig. Gen. (MDDF) Stanley Minken. Task Force Terrapin will operationalize various MDDF assets from the 121st Engineer Regiment, the 10th Medical Regiment and other units to carry out this important mission. A fully staffed MDDF “mobile hospital” will be erected and staffed for the duration of the competition. In addition, Task Force Terrapin will install and operate four fully staffed medical aid stations along the race route.

Brig. Gen. (MDDF) Minken commented that, “This is a major event in the State of Maryland and we take pride in being asked to ensure the health and medical safety of these top tier athletes.” “Our outstanding volunteer medical professionals and support staff stand ready to serve the citizens of Maryland when needed in emergency or disaster situations as well as major community events.

The Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) is the State’s uniformed volunteer military unit providing professional and technical assistance to the Maryland Military Department.
